How to measure a shirt

One way to find out your measurements for a custom-sized dress shirt is to measure a dress shirt that already fits you well. Continue reading to find out exactly how to proceed when measuring your shirt.

Measuring collar

When measuring the collar, start by unbuttoning the shirt and lay it flat down on its back. Start measuring from the outer edge of the buttonhole to the center of the button.

Measuring chest

The chest measurement is taken across the shirt at the bottom of the sleeve seams. Note that this is not a circumference measurement.

Measuring waist

The waist measurement is taken across the shirt at the narrowest part of the waist. Note that this is not a circumference measurement.

Measuring bottom

The bottom width measurement is taken across the shirt at the end of the side seams. Please note that this is not a circumference measurement.

Measuring shirt length

The shirt length measurement is taken from a point straight out from the center of the neck opening down to where your shirt ends.

Measuring shoulder width

The shoulder width measurement is taken at the top of the shirt from one sleeve seam to the other.

Measuring long sleeve - upper length

The upper length measurement is taken from the top of the shoulder where the sleeve meets the body to the end of the cuff.

Measuring cuffs

The cuff measurement is taken across the open cuff, from the outer edge of the buttonhole to the center of the button.

Measuring sleeve width

The sleeve width measurement is taken across the sleeve where it meets the shirt body. Don’t forget to straighten the seam when taking this measurement.
